Scarthingwell: what to know before moving day
The hall was built in the 18th century for the Hawke family, and the naval officer Edward Hawke lived there. It was demolished in 1960, and a care home was built on the site in 2022. The private chapel put up beside the lake in 1854 is now the Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception, listed Grade II. Homes lie along Scarthingwell Lane and around Lakeside and Lakeside Approach, near the lake with its Heron Island, and Tadcaster Golf Course is laid out here too.
The land around was part of the fighting on Palm Sunday 1461: before the Battle of Towton the Yorkists advanced north through the parish, and in 2018 the protected battlefield was extended into it. Lord Clifford was killed at Dintingdale, inside the parish, where the map still marks Dinting Dale Plantation.
