Narrow halls, front steps and lift cars: getting a sofa into a Liverpool home
In a terraced house the front door is often the tightest point, opening onto a hall that turns into the front room. A three-seater usually goes in on its end and is turned through the doorway, which works only if the measurements allow it. Take the width of the door, the width of the hall and the height of the room door, and compare them with the sofa's depth and height before you order.
A flat is a different test. In a Baltic Triangle or city centre block, the sofa has to stand in the lift car, or it goes up the stairs and that time is counted. In a townhouse flat on Canning Street or Rodney Street, the steps outside and the turns on each landing decide it. Sofas with feet that unscrew are easier, and the feet are put back on once the sofa is in place.
Tape measure first: a Liverpool sofa checklist
- Measure the front door, the hall and the room door against the sofa's depth and height
- In a flat, measure the lift door and the depth of the car
- Ask a private seller whether the sofa came in through the front door or the back
- Book the council's free bulky item collection for the old sofa before the new one arrives

Sofa Delivery in Liverpool: your questions
Will a sofa fit through a terraced house door?
Usually, if it is turned on its end, but measure first. Compare the door and hall widths with the sofa's depth and height, and send them with the booking.
Can the old sofa go when the new one comes in?
No. Book Liverpool City Council's free bulky item collection, which takes sofas and armchairs left outside on the collection day.
Will a corner sofa go up to a Canning Street townhouse flat?
Only in sections. Most corner sofas split into two or three pieces, which is what gets them round the landings of a Georgian stair, so check how yours comes apart before it is ordered.
