Narrow hallways and front rooms: getting a sofa into a Wigan terrace
In the terraced streets of Gidlow, Springfield and Beech Hill the front door can open straight into the living room or onto a short, narrow hall. A three-seater has to tip on end to turn the corner, and a sofa with fixed arms and a deep frame may not make it at all. Measure the door, the hall and any turn into the room, and compare them with the sofa's depth and height before buying.
If the measurements are tight, look for a sofa with legs that unscrew or a back that lifts off, and tell us so the tools come with the van. In Worsley Mesnes and Hawkley Hall the semis have wider halls and the van can usually stop close to the gate. The sofa is wrapped in the van and the wrap comes off in the room, not on the pavement.

- Check whether the legs unscrew or the back cushions lift off
- Move the old sofa out of the way before the new one arrives

- For a seller's sofa, ask for its measurements and photos of any marks
