Gidlow terraces and Worsley Mesnes semis: two kinds of Wigan move
In the Wigan West ward, which covers Beech Hill, Springfield and Gidlow, more than four homes in ten are terraced. A terrace off Gidlow Lane or Springfield Road is a modest load but a slow carry: a front door onto the pavement, a narrow hall and a stair that turns, so wardrobes and bed frames are taken apart upstairs and come down in pieces. The van stops in the nearest legal gap and the trolley covers the rest.
South of the river the picture changes. Worsley Mesnes and the Newtown side of Douglas ward are more than half semi-detached, and estates such as Hawkley Hall and Worsley Hall have wider roads where the van can stand by the gate. A three-bed semi with a loft and a full shed is often more than one van load, which is worked out from photos at the quote rather than discovered on the day.
Lofts, sheds and turning stairs: readying a Wigan house
- On a terraced row in Gidlow or Springfield, ask neighbours the evening before to leave a gap near your door
- Open the loft and the shed for the photos, as in a Worsley Mesnes semi they often hold a room's worth
- Keep fixings from dismantled beds in a labelled bag taped to the frame
- Moving into Swinley between 9am and 5pm on a weekday or Saturday, check the permit zone signs for the street
- Have keys and the new address's parking sorted with the agent before completion day
From Beech Hill rows to the Hawkley Hall estate: Wigan moves by area
- Beech Hill, Springfield and Gidlowthe most terraced ward in town, with tight stairs and on-street parking

Rooms, loft and the walk from the van: pricing a Wigan removal
How many rooms are going, what the loft and shed hold, how close the van can stop and the miles to the new house decide it. The price is fixed before we set off, with the drive over from Bradford included. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
House Removals in Wigan: your questions
How far ahead should I book a house removal in Wigan?
As soon as you have a completion or tenancy date. Weekends and the end of the month go first, so a week or two of notice gives the widest choice of days.
Can one van move a three-bedroom semi in Worsley Mesnes?
Sometimes. A three-bed with a full loft and shed can need two trips, so send photos of every room, the loft and any outbuildings, and you will know before booking.
What do I do with furniture I am not taking?
Anything staying behind needs sorting first, as the van carries only what goes to the new house. Wigan Council offers two free bulky waste collections of up to five items a year, and charities in the borough take usable furniture.
Are my things insured during the move?
Yes. Goods in transit are covered to £10,000 and public liability to £5 million, and the details come with the quote.
