Woodhouse (Leeds): what to know before moving day
The older homes are red-brick back-to-back and through terraces. Among them are the concrete council houses of the Holborn estate, newer blocks of student accommodation and a little light industry. The former parish church of St Mark's gives its name to St Mark's Road and to the university's St Mark's Residences, and Quarry Mount Primary School and the Chemic Tavern, open since the 1840s, are older landmarks. The old Woodhouse was much bigger, a horseshoe running from Little Woodhouse by Burley Street up Clarendon Road, across the university site and Woodhouse Moor, to the wooded slopes of Woodhouse Ridge on the Meanwood Valley Trail. Holborn Approach, once Institution Street, has the 1851 Temperance Hall and Mechanics' Institute opened by Samuel Smiles, now Holborn Church. St George's Fields, the old Woodhouse Cemetery, is now a public park.
How the van gets to Woodhouse (Leeds)
Woodhouse Lane, the A660, is the main road, running north-west from the city centre across the Inner Ring Road and past the university. From Bradford the A647 reaches Armley and the Inner Ring Road carries on round the north of the centre to it; Woodhouse Street and St Mark's Road lead into the terraces.
