Moving in Washpit: what to know first
Washpit is a small group of houses and farms along Green Lane, Rich Gate and Cartworth Bank Road, around the old mill by the river. The mill now holds a cafe and a car repair workshop, so expect cars coming and going on Green Lane in the day. Dover Lane is a residential lane that is also a public footpath, about four metres wide where it is tarmac and narrowing to a gravel track. Tell us where your gate is and whether the van can pull in off the lane.
The roads in are country lanes. From Holmfirth they are Rotcher Road, Cartworth Road and Lamma Well Road, with no village speed limit on Cartworth Road, and Washpit New Road comes down from the B6106 Dunford Road. Tracks such as Dunsley Bank Road and Hill Top Road are rough gravel about three metres wide, and Hill Top Road is closed to motor vehicles, so a house on one of them means a carry from the lane.
Washpit: the local picture
The mill is the landmark: a listed stone textile mill of about 1840, four storeys and an attic high, with a gabled front of five bays, a round-headed window in the gable apex and taking-in doors on three floors of its side. Today the Washpit Mills address on Green Lane holds the Oil Can Cafe and a car repair workshop called The Carding Shed.
Green Lane is a plain asphalt lane without markings that crosses the river on a bridge and climbs from there, with no signed weight limit. Rich Gate, Cartworth Bank Road and Cartworth Fold are close, Dover Lane is a street that doubles as a public footpath, and the Ribble runs through the hamlet on its way to Holmfirth.
How the van gets to Washpit
There are two ways in. Washpit New Road links Green Lane with the B6106 Dunford Road and Underbank Old Road on the Holmfirth side, while the route suggested from Bradford comes out of Holmfirth on the A635 and round by Rotcher Road, Cartworth Road and Lamma Well Road. From Bradford by the M62 and Brockholes, allow roughly 40 to 55 minutes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 55 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Washpit
Why does the name turn up as Washpit, Wash Pit and Washpit Mill?
Different records spell it differently. The listing spells the building Wash Pit Mill, the hamlet is often called Washpit Mill, and the road is Washpit New Road. What the driver needs is the street, such as Green Lane, and a postcode like HD9 2RD or HD9 2SN.
Does the van come into Washpit from Holmfirth or from Dunford Road?
Either can work. From the town centre it is Rotcher Road, Cartworth Road and Lamma Well Road to Green Lane; from the B6106 Dunford Road side, Washpit New Road leads down to Green Lane. Tell us which side of the river your house is on and we pick the shorter way.
Will the cafe and garage at the mill affect parking on moving day?
They can. The Oil Can Cafe and The Carding Shed both use the Washpit Mills address on Green Lane, so there may be cars in the lane while they are open. If you know where the van can wait clear of them, say so when you book.
