Upton: what to know before moving day
High Street is the centre, with the post office, Upton Methodist Church, the Upton Arms and the United Services working men's club, and Waggon Lane leads to Upton Primary School and The Gantry. Upton Colliery opened south-east of the village in 1924 and closed in 1964 after geological faulting and an explosion; its site is now Upton Country Park, with a pond, a memorial garden and a pit winding wheel set into the ground.
Part of the housing follows a numbered plan, First Avenue, Second Avenue and Third Avenue, with East Avenue, West Avenue, Rose Avenue and Grosvenor Avenue close by, and the Hill Estate is marked as a neighbourhood on the map. The Hull and Barnsley Railway opened a station at the south end of the village in 1885, and its old trackbed is still mapped.
How the van gets to Upton
The B6474 passes the village as Field Lane and New Lane and meets the A638 Doncaster Road at a T-junction; the A638 runs north-west through Ackworth Moor Top to Wakefield and on to Bradford. Common Lane and Waggon Lane are the other roads in.
