North Elmsall: what to know before moving day
Most homes in the parish are detached or semi-detached, and apart from the church the village has few amenities, so shops and services are in Upton and South Elmsall. The older buildings are in magnesian limestone: The Old Hall, part of a manor house of the early 17th century or earlier, its barn, and Park View and The Cottage, a farmhouse of about 1700. North Elmsall Lodge Farmhouse of about 1800, with its coach house and barn, is listed too.
St Margaret's, designed by A H Hoole of London, has been Grade II listed since 2001 and holds the parish's First World War memorial. White Hart Fold and St Margaret's Court are beside it, and the Dale Lane Industrial Estate is close to the Dale Lane roundabout on the A638. The village's own station on the Hull and Barnsley Railway closed to passengers in 1932.

Upton Colliery, which served both villages, drew its first coal in 1927 and closed in 1964, and the parish population jumped from 462 in 1921 to 2,368 in 1931 as it opened. Before that the parish was farmland, with agriculture the main employer in the 1881 census.
