Kellingley: what to know before moving day
The colliery, nicknamed the Big K, began producing coal in April 1965, and many of its miners came down from Scotland after pits there closed in the 1960s. Around 2,000 men worked there at any one time. The site is earmarked for commercial development, and the map shows a business site called Konect62 near the old pit.
The homes are close to Weeland Road: Shaftesbury Avenue and The Oval are the residential streets, with Kellingley Road, Sudforth Lane, Turver's Lane and Common Lane around them. Sudforth Lane has a level crossing. There is a monument to the Queen's Silver Jubilee in the village.
How the van gets to Kellingley
From Bradford the M62 runs east to junction 33, which serves Ferrybridge and the A162. The A645 Weeland Road passes the village, running towards Knottingley in one direction and Eggborough in the other. Bus 476 between Pontefract and Selby also stops at Kellingley.
