Horton Bank: what to know before moving day
The oldest houses sit on the main road and on Old Road just behind it. 93 Old Road is a late 18th-century farmhouse with its barn set at right angles to the road, 893 Great Horton Road is a stone house of the 1840s, and the Crown Inn with Crown Cottage dates from the early 19th century. Hollingwood Lane has a cottage of 1814 and a single-storey row of about 1820 with pantile roofs. All are Grade II listed, so a narrow original doorway is worth measuring before the day.
Away from the road the streets spread out in every direction: Ascot Avenue, Speeton Avenue, Cresswell Terrace, Windermere Road, Mickledore Ridge and Hardknot Close are all a short walk apart. Windermere Road hides the surprise of the area, a manor house built in 1714 and later refronted, now divided between several addresses with a barn and a cottage alongside.
Useful landmarks for the driver are Horton Bank Country Park and Clayton Golf Club on the open land nearby, Hollingwood Primary School, Jer Lane Cricket Club and the Speeton Avenue allotments.
How the van gets to Horton Bank
Great Horton Road, the A647, is the road up from the city centre, and both Old Road and Hollingwood Lane meet it here before it carries on to Queensbury. Hollybank Road also leads off it into the housing. Beacon Road, the B6380, runs east to west along the southern edge of the area and meets Buttershaw Drive, which is the way in if you are coming across from the Buttershaw side.
