Hopetown: what to know before moving day
Hopetown was a colliery place. In 1871 Dom Pedro, the Emperor of Brazil, visited Normanton with his Empress and gave his name, slightly altered, to the Don Pedro Colliery at Hopetown, and the roads on the old pit site still carry it: Don Pedro Avenue and Dom Pedro Close. Loscoe Grange, a mid-18th-century red brick house later put to other uses, is a listed building nearby.
Around Foxbridge Way and Good Hope Close the land is industrial: the Asda distribution centre, NHS Logistics, Normanton Industrial Estate, Valencia Court and Courtyard 31 are all within a few hundred metres. The homes are on streets such as Village Gardens, Village Close, Coronation Street, Gilcar Street, Norwood Street, Hopetown Walk and Beckbridge Road. How the van gets to Hopetown
Leave the M62 at junction 31, the Normanton Interchange, and the A655 Pontefract Road runs straight into Hopetown. Castleford Road and Loscoe Lane are the other roads out, and the Normanton Bypass runs round the town from here.
