Newland: what to know before moving day
The Newland estate was founded in 1213 by King John as a preceptory of the Knights Templar and passed to the Knights Hospitaller in 1256, until Henry VIII took it at the Dissolution. The ruins of Newland Hall, last lived in in 1972, stand in woodland that is now a nature reserve. In the 19th century the clay here fed three brickworks, all built within the small area of Newland, and the last works in the town closed in the mid-1990s.
Newland Lane passes its allotments and crosses the railway at Newlands Lane Bridge. Housing streets nearby include Park Green, St Michaels Green, Smirthwaite View, Heseltine Close, Westfield Close and Ashfield Avenue, and Newland Surgery and a pharmacy are on hand. Normanton's centre, with the library, Market Street and Queen Street, is a short walk away. On a terraced street near the centre, tell the van where it can stop.
How the van gets to Newland
Newland Lane is the road to know, with Newland Surgery and the Catholic club on it; Queen Street and Market Street lead in from the town centre. From M62 junction 31 the A655 comes round to Normanton, and Wakefield Road carries on to the Woodhouse side.
