The old core is on Kirkgate and High Street. 17 and 19 Kirkgate is a 17th-century house, now divided, with a listed barn and stables behind it, and 12, 14 and 16 Kirkgate is a mid 18th-century house also split into homes. St Paul's Church, a Commissioners' church of 1823 to 1825, was rebuilt after a fire in 1916. Opposite its vicarage on High Street, a listed boundary stone of about 1830 still marks the line between Dewsbury and Batley.
Around that core are the estates. One group of roads is named after the Lake District, Langdale, Thirlmere, Grasmere, Coniston, Eskdale, Windermere, Ullswater and Borrowdale among them, and another after islands, with Guernsey Road, Jersey Close, Alderney Road and Rathlin Road.
