Terrace, estate or new-build: how a Doncaster house move differs
The terraces close to the centre set the hardest conditions. In Hyde Park, Childers Street and Jarratt Street run in tight rows off Carr House Road, front doors open almost onto the pavement and cars line both kerbs by teatime, so a morning start gets the van nearest the door. Hexthorpe's streets beside the old Plant Works, and the older end of Balby along Balby Road, are much the same. Furniture goes out through the front door on a trolley, and a narrow staircase decides whether a wardrobe travels whole or in pieces.
Further out there is more room. Intake was built as a council estate in the 1950s and 1960s, Wheatley Hills grew from the 1930s around The Grove, and Cantley is mostly 1950s semis and small terraces, so the van can usually stand close and the carry is short. Newer homes opposite the racecourse, on the Woodfield Plantation site in Balby and on the former Markham Main colliery land at Armthorpe come with fitted wardrobes that stay behind and straight stairs that make the lift easier.
Getting a Doncaster house ready for moving day
- Tell us whether it is a terrace near the centre, an Intake, Wheatley Hills or Cantley estate house, or a new-build, as that decides where the van can stand
- On a Hyde Park or Hexthorpe terrace, ask neighbours the evening before to leave the kerb outside free
- Check the race fixtures if you live near Leger Way or Bawtry Road, and keep clear of the four days of the St Leger meeting in September
- List what is in the loft, garage and shed, so the number of van loads is worked out properly
- Tape bed bolts and fittings in a bag to the frame they came from
- Switch the fridge freezer off the night before so it is defrosted and dry by morning

House Removals in Doncaster: your questions
Can one van move my Doncaster house?
A flat or a small house, yes, sometimes in two loads. The van floor is 3.4m long and 1.3m wide between the wheel arches, with 1.7m of headroom. A video walk-round settles it; a three-bedroom semi with a full loft and garage is usually beyond one van, and you will hear that before booking.
Do you cover Doncaster from Bradford?
Yes. It is 41 miles, 55 to 70 minutes by the M62 and the A1, and the drive is part of the fixed price.
Will you take the furniture we are not keeping?
No. Only what is going to the new house goes in the van. City of Doncaster Council collects bulky items you book online, and Doncaster Refurnish picks up reusable furniture from homes in the borough.
Is an upright piano possible?
Yes, with notice. Say so when you ask for a price and send a photo of the route from the room to the front door.
