Upperthong: what to know before moving day
The name probably means the upper narrow strip of land, set against Netherthong on lower ground. Upperthong was a township of the old parish of Almondbury and its own civil parish from 1866 until it joined Holmfirth in 1921. The parish church of St John is here, and three Last of the Summer Wine actors, Peter Sallis, Bill Owen and his son Tom Owen, are buried in its churchyard.
Towngate and Broad Lane are the heart of the village, with Wickins Lane, Binns Lane, Parkhead Lane and Booth House Lane leading off, and residential roads such as Holme View Avenue and Upper Meadows. The village hall, the Junior and Infant School, the Royal Oak and the Farmers Arms are the landmarks. Upperthong Lane is part of the Pennine Cycleway, National Route 68, so you may meet cyclists on the way up. The Village Gala on the last weekend in June hosts the World Welly Wanging Championships, a day when a quieter date for moving is wise.
How the van gets to Upperthong
The van reaches Holmfirth from Bradford by way of Huddersfield and the A616, then takes the A635 Greenfield Road out of the centre. Ash Grove Road climbs from it to Broad Lane in the village; Upperthong Lane is the other way up, from Holmfirth itself.
