Tong Street: what to know before moving day
The name goes back to local government in the 1870s. A board for a district called Tong Street was set up in 1871 to run the western part of Tong parish, and in 1877 it took over the whole parish and was renamed Tong. The Tong estate sold land here, and that is why Tong Street became industrial, commercial and residential while Tong village stayed rural.
The road has shops and trade counters along it, with Avenue Retail Park, Tong Street Post Office, the Upper Room church and the Conservative and Liberal clubs among the places to give as landmarks. Behind it are residential streets such as Denbrook Avenue, Moorcroft Road, Muirhead Drive and Landscove Avenue, and short streets such as Edward Street, John Street and Joseph Street. Tong Cemetery has a Grade II listed war memorial of 1925, a soldier leaning on his rifle.
Tong Leadership Academy, a secondary school for ages 11 to 19 opened in 2008, is on Westgate Hill Street, so a weekday move nearby is easier outside the start and end of the school day.
How the van gets to Tong Street
From the city, the A650 Wakefield Road reaches the Dudley Hill roundabout on the ring road and carries on south-east as Tong Street, then as Westgate Hill Street. The A651 Bradford Road branches off towards Heckmondwike. Toftshaw Lane, Broadstone Way and Holme Lane are the main side roads mapped here.
