Bierley: what to know before moving day
The estate is a web of closes, drives and avenues hung off a handful of busier roads: Bierley Lane, Shetcliffe Lane, Dawson Lane and Ferrand Avenue. Older buildings survive among the newer housing. On Shetcliffe Lane, a set of yeoman's houses from the 15th or 16th century was encased in gritstone in 1625 and is now Grade II* listed, and more listed cottages stand at 426 to 430 Shetcliffe Lane and on Walker Street. The church of St John the Evangelist, Bierley, dates from 1766 and is also Grade II*.
The name used to cover much more ground. In 1872 the Bierley township, also called North Bierley, took in Wibsey, Low Moor and several hamlets, which is why North Bierley Cemetery sits between Low Moor and Buttershaw rather than here.
How the van gets to Bierley
The A6177 ring road runs past the north of the estate as Rooley Lane. Its Bierley roundabout serves the Asda and the estate, and has a cut-through for clockwise traffic, so it is a direct way in from the city side. Heading west along the ring road brings you to the Staygate roundabout and the M606 towards the M62.
