Swillington: what to know before moving day
The village centre is where the A642 Wakefield Road meets Church Lane and Astley Lane. Within about 100 metres of that junction are Tesco Express, Londis, the post office, the pharmacy, the village hall, the primary school and St Mary's, a Grade II* listed church of 14th or 15th-century origin with Victorian additions. The Miners Welfare Club is a little further along.
Swillington was a coal village until Primrose Hill pit closed, and a housing estate now stands on the colliery site; the Primrose Hill streets (Drive, Gardens, Grove, Garth, Green and Close) keep the pit's name. West of the village is Leventhorpe Hall, a Grade II* house of 1774, and Leventhorpe Vineyard, planted in 1986. The electricity network operator trains its overhead linesmen at a school in the village.
How the van gets to Swillington
Wakefield Road is the A642, which runs from junction 30 of the M62 through Oulton and carries on north through Garforth to junction 47 of the M1, so the van can arrive from either motorway. Swillington Lane heads north from the village to the A63 Selby Road at Swillington Common, and Astley Lane runs towards Little Preston.
