Penda's Fields: what to know before moving day
The estate takes its name from Penda of Mercia, the king killed at the Battle of the Winwaed in 655 AD, a battle that Wikipedia associates with this ground and with Barnbow Wood. The estate has its own secondary school, John Smeaton Academy, and the John Smeaton Leisure Centre beside it, both named after the 18th-century civil engineer. OpenStreetMap also shows The Cock Beck pub and a few takeaways close by.
Before the houses went up there was a railway station here: Penda's Way, on the Cross Gates to Wetherby line, opened in 1939 and closed in 1964. OpenStreetMap still marks the spot as Penda's Halt, and the old trackbed passes the estate. Street names come in sets, such as Rockingham Road, Rockingham Way and Rockingham Close, or Bamburgh Road and Bamburgh Close, so the house number and the full street name matter as much as the postcode.
How the van gets to Penda's Fields
Barwick Road and Manston Lane are the roads that bring you into the estate. Just east of it runs the A6120, the East Leeds Orbital Route, named Ring Road Barnbow on the map along this stretch; it opened in 2022 and links north Leeds with junction 46 of the M1 at Thorpe Park. From Bradford the van comes round the Leeds Outer Ring Road towards Cross Gates.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
