Lofthouse Gate: what to know before moving day
Lofthouse Colliery stood in Lofthouse Gate, close to Outwood, and many of its miners lived here. In March 1973 seven men died when the workings flooded, and the pit closed in 1981. The pit site is now housing and a golf course that has since closed, and the map shows Lofthouse Colliery Nature Park and a colliery memorial close by. Further back, the Lingwell Gate coin moulds, used by Romano-British forgers, were found at Lingwell Gate, and Lingwell Nook Lane and Lingwell Chase carry the name today.
The streets off Leeds Road include Lingwell Nook Lane, Ridings Lane and Ridings Way, the Springfield Road, Avenue, Crescent, Drive and Rise group, Park Avenue and Park Drive, and Colliery Approach. How the van gets to Lofthouse Gate
Leeds Road, the A61, runs straight through Lofthouse Gate between Wakefield and Leeds, and Potovens Lane and Canal Lane are the other through roads on the map. From Bradford the van can use the A650 to M1 junction 41 and on towards Wakefield, then turn north on the A61 through Outwood.
