Holme (Holmfirth): what to know before moving day
Unlike most places called Holme, this one takes its name from the Old English for holly. The River Holme starts from water seeping off the moor around it, and Brownhill and Ramsden reservoirs lie just below the village. The Holme Moss transmitting station stands on the moor to the south-west, 526 metres above sea level, and the Peak District Boundary Walk passes through the village.
Holme has a pub, the Fleece, and a primary school on Meal Hill Road, which was called Pinfold Street when the Board School opened. The old schoolroom was first built in 1694 from Joshua Earnshaw's bequest; only part of its doorway and dated headstone survive. Field Head Lane and Brownhill Lane lead off the main road. At this height, weather matters more than in the valley bottom, so keep an eye on the forecast for a winter date and let us know if the lane to your door has not been cleared.
How the van gets to Holme (Holmfirth)
From Bradford the van goes by way of Huddersfield and the A616 to the Holmfirth side of the valley, then follows the A6024 up through Holmfirth, Hinchliffe Mill and Holmbridge. In Holme the A6024 is Woodhead Road, and it carries on over Holme Moss into Derbyshire.
