Glass Houghton: what to know before moving day
For most of the nineteenth century Glass Houghton was a village in its own right, and the 1890 Ordnance Survey map shows its largest buildings along both sides of Front Street, now the A656. A plot on what is now School Lane was sold in 1837 for a Methodist chapel and Sunday school. The village became a separate civil parish in 1866 and was merged back into Castleford in 1938.
The A656 runs as Front Street and Park Road past Lidl, Aldi, the Malt Shovel and the Royal Oak, and Holywell Lane, the B6136, heads east from it towards Townville. Around Redhill Avenue, Stainburn Avenue and Brindle Park Drive nearly all the buildings are tagged as houses, and the Glasshoughton Wheel of Light, a former pit winding wheel, stands as a memorial to the miners. For a Saturday move, allow for shoppers heading to the outlet centre on Tomahawk Trail.
How the van gets to Glass Houghton
Glass Houghton is the first part of Castleford off the motorway: junction 32 of the M62 connects to the A656, which runs north through the district as Park Road and Front Street towards the town centre. Glasshoughton station on the Pontefract Line opened in 2005 and has a 100-space car park reached by a bridge over the track.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Both spellings appear. The 1890 Ordnance Survey map shows Glass Houghton as two words, and in the 1870s the place was known as Houghton-Glass; today the station, the council ward and the Wakefield College campus use Glasshoughton as one word. Either will find the address.
