Friendly: what to know before moving day
The settlement spreads either side of Burnley Road. Uphill are Blackwall Lane, Blackwall Rise, Daisy Mount and Friendly Avenue; below the road, Cliffe Terrace and The Banks drop towards the canal. Two local lanes, Water Hill Lane and Timmey Lane, are mapped as one-way, which changes how a van leaves once it is loaded. There is a BP filling station with an Asda Express on the main road, and the former Friendly Inn on Burnley Road now trades as The Copper Cow.
Some houses are far older than the terraces around them. Blackwall Farmhouse dates from the early 17th century and has been altered and divided, Hoyle House was a farmhouse extended in 1885 and later subdivided, and 22 Burnley Road is a small stone house thought to be mid 17th century. All three are Grade II listed, so expect thick walls, deep sills and doorways that were never sized for modern furniture.
How the van gets to Friendly
Burnley Road is the A646, the valley road between Halifax and Todmorden; a listed milestone set in the wall on its north side here still gives the distances both ways. From the middle of Sowerby Bridge, Tuel Lane (the A6139) climbs up to meet it close to Friendly. Coming from Bradford, the usual approach is through Halifax and west along the A646.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
