Aberford: what to know before moving day
Aberford stands where the old Great North Road crossed the Cock Beck, about halfway between London and Edinburgh, and the 18th-century bridge still takes Main Street over the beck. Instead of growing round a centre, the village spread out in a line along that road, and a good deal of new housing has been added since the early 1990s. The Swan Hotel was a staging post for travellers on the Great North Road, and the Arabian Horse is a landmark inside the conservation area.
The Gascoigne Almshouses, built in 1844 by two sisters of the Gascoigne family of Parlington Hall, are Grade II* listed, and St Ricarius Church is an 1861 rebuilding of a 12th-century church, with the Church of England primary school next to it. Aberford House on Main Street is an 18th-century mansion. If your home is one of the older buildings on Main Street, send a photo of the front door and stairs with their widths.
How the van gets to Aberford
Main Street is the old Great North Road. The A1(M) now bypasses the village, marked on OpenStreetMap as the Aberford By-Pass, and the A64 from Leeds to York runs along the northern boundary, with access roads to Aberford at the Bramham Moor interchange. Lotherton Lane, Parlington Drive, Cattle Lane and Bunkers Hill lead off the village streets.
