Lifts, one-way streets and the dock road: moving a Preston flat
In the centre the one-way system decides where the van can stand. Fishergate, Church Street and Lancaster Road run one way and Friargate mostly one way, so the van comes round by Ring Way to the right side of the building, and a flat above a shop is loaded from a back street where there is one. Waiting and loading rules change from street to street, so tell us which entrance you use and the van parks to suit the signs.
Riversway is a different job. The flats round the old dock basin sit off Navigation Way and Port Way, away from the one-way centre, but a block with a gated entry or a barriered car park needs a fob, a code or a word with the managing agent about where a 2.5m van can stop. Once inside, the size of the lift car matters more than the floor: a wardrobe that fits goes down in minutes, and one that does not goes down the stairwell, so say which it is.
Fobs, lift slots and back doors: a Preston flat checklist
- If the building has rules about moving days, reserve the lift with the agent first
- A rear or service door onto a back lane can be closer to the van than the front lobby
- At a gated Riversway block, leave the gate code or fob with the driver for the day
- Measure the inside of the lift car, door to back wall and floor to ceiling, against the biggest piece
- A flat above a Fishergate or Friargate shop may have a rear door off a service lane, so mention it
Marina blocks, flats over shops and Avenham apartments
- Riversway and the marinaflats and houses round the old dock basin, off Navigation Way
- Fishergate and Friargateflats over shops on mostly one-way streets, loaded from the side or rear
- Avenham and Frenchwoodapartment blocks and converted houses near Avenham Park
- Winckley SquareGeorgian buildings, mostly offices, with some flats above
- Maudland and Adelphinewer blocks among the student halls by the campus

Floors, lifts and the walk in: pricing a Preston flat move
Which floor, whether the furniture fits the lift, how far the van is from the entrance and how far the new flat is: those four things set the figure, and it is fixed before the day. See how we quote for the full breakdown.
Flat Removals in Preston: your questions
Can a one-bedroom flat in Preston city centre be moved in a morning?
With a working lift and the van close to the door, usually yes. Stairs, a long corridor or a carry round the corner from a one-way street add time, so send the floor and the access with your request.
Will the van fit in my building's car park?
Only if there is no height barrier. The van is about 2.5m tall, so it stays out of covered or barriered car parks and loads from the street or an open forecourt instead.
Do you take beds apart for a flat move?
Yes. Beds and flat-pack wardrobes are taken apart at the old flat and put back up at the new one, as part of the price.
