Savile Town: what to know before moving day
The area takes its name from Thomas Savile, who once owned the townships of Dewsbury and Thornhill and also gave his name to the bridge into town. Savile Town was part of Thornhill Urban District until 1910, when it became part of Dewsbury. Mills along the Calder gave work here for decades, mostly in wool, some in cotton.
The Markazi mosque, one of the largest in Europe, is the landmark most people will recognise, and there are several other mosques and madrasahs among the streets. Headfield Road and Pentland Road run through the middle, with Falcon Road, Caledonian Road, Selbourne Road, Cowper Street, South Street and Clement Terrace around them. Pentland Infant and Nursery School is near Pentland Road, and Savile Town FC play at Savile Town Park on Park Road. With long terraces, measure the front door and the turn of the stairs before booking a large sofa.
How the van gets to Savile Town
Savile Road (the B6409) and Headfield Road are the main roads through the suburb, and the bridge across the Calder leads into Dewsbury town centre, where the A638 ring road circles the centre. Mill Street East is the other road in. From Bradford the M606 and M62, or the A638 through Cleckheaton and Heckmondwike, bring the van into Dewsbury first.
