Market days, and why Tuesday is the easy day to collect

Wednesday and Saturday are market days, with a flea market on Friday on top, and all three fill Market Place, Northgate and Corporation Street from early morning. Short-stay parking inside the ring road is gone by mid-morning and the traders' vans take the rest. If the seller lives centrally and can do any day, a Tuesday or a Thursday collection is simply quicker, and quicker is the only thing that affects what you pay.

Away from the centre it's a kerbside job every time. Through terraces across Savile Town, Ravensthorpe, Thornhill Lees and Westtown have no drives, no rear vehicle access and parking on both kerbs, so everything is carried from wherever the van can stop. Thornhill and Earlsheaton add a climb: both sit on steep banks above the Calder, and the pulls up Overthorpe and Thornhill High Street are walled and narrow.
