New Crofton: what to know before moving day
The first New Crofton was a set of terraces built close to Nostell Colliery, nicknamed Cribbin's Lump, or just The Lump. Lord St Oswald renamed it New Crofton, but subsidence from the pit was so bad that the houses were demolished in the 1980s, when the mines closed. The land sat empty for a long time before it was sold and a new estate was built on it. The pit itself, which closed in 1987, is now a nature park with three or four miles of paths linking to the Trans Pennine Trail.
The streets today are a mix. Oak Street, Elm Street, Ash Street and Beech Avenue are close to Santingley Lane, with allotments behind; Greentop, Greenside Park and Priory Ridge are nearby closes; and other streets have farming names such as Forage Way, Herbage View, Sward Way and Forb Road. New Crofton Post Office and The Manor Inn are on Santingley Lane, and Crofton Community Centre, formerly the Nostell Miners' Welfare, is on Middle Lane.
How the van gets to New Crofton
Santingley Lane is the through road, with Spring Lane meeting it at the heart of New Crofton; High Street leads west to old Crofton. One way from Bradford is through Wakefield and out on the A638 towards Doncaster, turning off for Crofton; allow roughly 40 to 55 minutes.

Was the HS2 depot going to be built in New Crofton?
It was proposed. The eastern leg of HS2 was routed through Crofton in 2017 with a rolling stock depot planned there, then the depot was moved to Leeds and the whole eastern leg was scrapped in November 2021. OpenStreetMap still marks the proposed depot land beside the railway near New Crofton.
