Horton Park: what to know before moving day
The park opened on 25 May 1878, on land the council bought in 1873, to a design by the landscape gardener William Gay. It has bowling greens open from April to September, a children's play area and a drinking fountain of 1886, and a parkrun starts there at 9am every Saturday. Horton Park Primary School, Horton Park Health Centre and Horton Community Farm are nearby landmarks.
Horton Park Avenue was the home of the old Park Avenue football and cricket ground, whose stands were demolished in 1980. Horton Park station, which served it from 1880, stood until 2005, when it was cleared for the car park of the Al-Jamia Suffa-Tul-Islam Grand Mosque. North-west of Great Horton Road, a planned group of mill workers' houses and shops from 1864 to 1865 fills Hart Street, Falcon Street, Union Road, Vine Street and Lime Street, in short stepped rows of sandstone that are now listed.
How the van gets to Horton Park
The A6177 ring road runs past as Horton Grange Road and Cross Lane, and the A647 comes in as Great Horton Road before turning onto All Saints Road and Dirkhill Road. Horton Park Avenue, Toby Lane and Laisteridge Lane are the local roads around the park. Vehicles cannot drive into the park itself without a permit, so loading happens from the surrounding streets.
