Chapeltown: what to know before moving day
Chapeltown was built as a wealthy Victorian suburb, and many of its large terraces and villas are still standing, a good share of them now divided into smaller flats. So a move here may start or end on an upper floor of a converted house, with a shared hallway and a turning staircase. Tell us the floor and whether the stairs are shared, and send a photo of the tightest turn if you have a big wardrobe or sofa. Parts of Chapeltown and Potternewton have been a conservation area since 2003.
When the grand plots stopped selling in the 1890s, the gaps filled with smaller terraced housing. Around Button Hill, Cowper Street, Hamilton Avenue and Leopold Street many rows have a named back lane behind them, which can be the easier side to load from. Spencer Place is the other through road on the east side, and the Chapeltown Health Centre is on the corner of Spencer Place and Leopold Street.
Useful landmarks for finding an address include the Reginald Centre, which replaced the old library, the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in the former Chapeltown Road New Synagogue, and the Leeds West Indian Centre. Every August bank holiday weekend the Leeds Carnival fills the area, so check your dates before booking a move then.
How the van gets to Chapeltown
Chapeltown Road is the spine: it runs for about 2 miles from Sheepscar Interchange, at the edge of the city centre, north to Harehills Lane. It has a bus lane for its full length and a cycle lane, so the van stops on a side street rather than on the main road. From Bradford the usual approach is the A647 into Leeds, then north out of Sheepscar. Scott Hall Road, the A61, runs parallel on the west side.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
