Belle Isle (Leeds): what to know before moving day
Belle Isle Road divides the estate from north to south, and Belle Isle Circus, a wide roundabout with open land in the middle, sits at the centre on the site of an old tram terminus. Most homes are red brick semi-detached houses. Many still belong to Leeds City Council and are managed by the Belle Isle Tenant Management Organisation, though some are now privately owned. The smaller estates within it include Petersfield Avenue, Windmill Road, The Clearings, The Brooms, The Aberfields, The Lanshaws and The Nesfields.
In the late 18th century Belle Isle was a small hamlet for workers at a colliery opposite Middleton Woods, and the old spoil tips are being turned into woodland next to Middleton Wood. The name was borrowed from Belle Ile off Brittany, held by British forces in 1761 to 1763. Around the research point, OpenStreetMap shows West Grange Drive, Old Run Road and the Winrose and Rosedale streets, with the post office on Belle Isle Parade.
How the van gets to Belle Isle (Leeds)
The Leeds Outer Ring Road starts in Belle Isle and runs west to Beeston as an un-numbered road, becoming the A6110 from Beeston. From Bradford, the M606 meets the M62 at junction 26, and the M621 loops off the M62 into south Leeds past Beeston towards Belle Isle. Belle Isle Road and West Grange Drive then take you into the estate.
