Wheldale: what to know before moving day
Wheldale Colliery was reached from Wheldon Road and was long known as the doctor's pit, after an investor named Dr Holt. After closure its methane fed a 10MW power plant, and the land was returned to woodland, grassland and wetland with bridleways and footpaths. OpenStreetMap shows the lagoons of the RSPB Fairburn Ings reserve, Wheldale Basin and Heald Wood close to the housing.
The streets of the estate off Stansfield Road are named after rivers: Wharfe Way, Nidd Drive, Swale Drive, Esk Avenue, Foss Walk, Calder Close, Rye Way and Humber Close. Fairburn Mews and Fairburn Vale are care homes on Wheldon Road. Castleford Tigers have played at Wheldon Road since 1927, so if your date falls on a home match day, mention it and the timing can be planned around the crowds.
How the van gets to Wheldale
Wheldon Road runs out of Castleford town centre to Wheldale and on to New Fryston, and Fryston Road joins from the Airedale side. From Bradford the van comes along the M62 to junction 32 and through the town on the A656.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
