Portobello: what to know before moving day
Seven estates were started by the council after 1918, and Portobello came first. Homes not bought under the Right to Buy passed to the housing association Wakefield and District Housing in 2005. Milnthorpe Lane runs through the middle, and the streets off it include Duke of York Avenue, Clifford Avenue, Clifford View, Hastings Avenue, Warren Avenue, Castle Avenue and Portobello Road and Grove.
Pugneys Country Park, made from a former opencast mine and gravel quarry and opened in 1985, has two lakes that also act as an overflow for the Calder, and Sandal Castle stands on its ridge above. The map marks the site of the 1460 Battle of Wakefield close by. St Thomas a Becket Catholic Secondary School and the Manygates Education Centre are the other big landmarks near the estate.
How the van gets to Portobello
From Bradford the van reaches Wakefield by the A650 or the motorway, crosses to the south side of the river and takes Barnsley Road, the A61, towards Sandal. Manygates Lane and Milnthorpe Lane are the two street names to look for from the main road.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
