Little Germany: what to know before moving day
The quarter was built from 1855 onwards, mostly by merchants from mainland Europe, many of them German and many Jewish, who put up large Italianate warehouses to show and sell cloth for export. Caspian House at 61 East Parade, from 1873, was the warehouse of D. Delius and Company, whose senior partner was the father of the composer Frederick Delius. OpenStreetMap marks Currer House and Austral House as Grade II listed.
Bradford Council has been promoting the conversion of the old warehouses into homes, hotels and offices, so a move here is often to or from an apartment inside a Victorian shell. Treadwells Mill on Upper Park Gate, Olicana House on Chapel Street and the Gatehaus, an 11-storey glass block finished in 2007, are all mapped as flats. Before booking, ask your building manager where a van may stand and how big the lift is, then measure your largest piece against the lift door.
Hick Street, Burnett Street, Cater Street, Field Street and Chapel Street sit close together in the middle of the quarter. The Bradford Playhouse on Chapel Street, a 266-seat theatre with a mural on its back wall marking the centenary of the Independent Labour Party, founded in Bradford in 1893, is an easy point to give the driver.
How the van gets to Little Germany
The A647 Leeds Road runs along the southern edge of Little Germany, and East Parade turns off Leeds Road into the warehouse streets, meeting Peckover Street at the top. On the northern side, Church Bank links Peckover Street and Vicar Lane with Barkerend Road and Stott Hill beside the cathedral, and Barkerend Road joins the A650 Shipley Airedale Road. Tell us the building name as well as the street, because several warehouses share a frontage.

Little Germany: questions before you book
Why is it called Little Germany?
Because a large share of the merchants who built its warehouses in the second half of the 19th century came from Germany. Bradford drew more foreign trade after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 disrupted commerce between France and Germany.
Is Little Germany a conservation area?
Yes. The whole quarter is protected as a conservation area and many of its buildings are individually listed. For a move, that usually means original stone steps and shared entrances, so send photos of the doorway and stairs with your quote request.
