Barnsley College leavers and the run down the M1
Barnsley College teaches from its Old Mill Lane campus and the Honeywell Sports Village, and its University Centre fills the former Mining and Technical College on Church Street with foundation degrees, degrees and higher apprenticeships. For anyone going further, Sheffield is about 16 miles down the M1 from junction 37, with the University of Sheffield's Endcliffe and Ranmoor student villages on the western side of the city. Leeds is about 22 miles north on the M1, and Huddersfield is reached by junction 38 and the A637.
What a first year takes is modest: bedding, a laptop and lamp, clothes in a few boxes, pans and plates, maybe a bike, which leaves most of a long van empty. Sheffield and Leeds halls give out move-in times, and the Barnsley pick-up is planned back from that time. The Hallam and Penistone lines from the Interchange are fine for a weekend bag, but not for a duvet, a monitor and three crates of kitchen things. Coming home in June is the same journey the other way, with a year's extra belongings on board.
Planning a student move from Barnsley
- Book the hall's move-in time before the van; Endcliffe is about 17 miles from central Barnsley, so a morning arrival works
- From a Dodworth or Darton cul-de-sac, collect in the morning before parked cars close up the turning space
- Bikes ride whole, strapped upright against the side of the van
- Between tenancies over summer, the van can drop things at a self-storage unit you rent near the campus
- University Centre students coming into Barnsley can ask the college's student services about housing before booking the van

Student Removals in Barnsley: your questions
Can I study for a degree in Barnsley itself?
There is degree-level study, though no university of its own. Barnsley College University Centre on Church Street runs degrees validated by universities including Sheffield Hallam, Hull and Leeds Trinity. Most degree students move to Sheffield, Leeds, Huddersfield or further.
What should I send to get a price?
Send a picture of everything going, your Barnsley address, the hall's address and the arrival slot the university gave you. That is enough for a fixed figure before the van is booked.
Could the van fetch my room in June and take it back for the new year?
It can, booked as two trips. There is no storage on offer, so if you want things kept in Sheffield or Leeds over the summer, hire your own self-storage unit there and the van will drop them in and fetch them out.
