White Cross: what to know before moving day
Harry Ramsden started in 1928 in a wooden hut at White Cross, beside the tram terminus, and later moved into a larger restaurant next door that once held the Guinness World Record as the biggest fish and chip shop in the world. The original restaurant closed in December 2011, the hut was demolished in 2012, and the Wetherby Whaler group bought the site. It remains the easiest landmark to give for an address here.
Around the junction are the White Cross pub, a petrol station, a gym and a vets. Tranmere Drive, Tranmere Parade, Cairn Avenue, Moorland Crescent and West End Terrace lead off it. Close by is High Royds, the former psychiatric hospital that opened in 1888, closed in 2003 and has since been turned into housing; its administration building is Grade II listed. For a flat in one of the converted buildings, check the entrance and the lift before the day.
How the van gets to White Cross
Bradford Road, the A6038, brings you up from Hollins Hill and past Tranmere Park, and the A65 runs on from White Cross towards Ilkley in one direction and through Guiseley towards Yeadon and Leeds in the other. Thorpe Lane and Tranmere Parade are the smaller roads off the junction.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 20 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
