Undercliffe: what to know before moving day
The name means below the cliff and was recorded as Indreclif in 1038; over the centuries the district has crept uphill into Eccleshill. Its main roads are old: the 1804 turnpike from Dudley Hill to Killinghall passed through, with the former Robin Hood pub acting as its toll office, and it survives as Killinghall Road and Harrogate Road.
Undercliffe Cemetery lies between Otley Road and Undercliffe Lane at about 210 metres above sea level. Laid out from 1851, it covers 26 acres and is Grade II* on the register of historic parks and gardens, with car parks at the Otley Road entrance and at the southern gate on Undercliffe Lane. The listed houses of Guy's Cliffe, from about 1850, are also on Undercliffe Lane.
Around Idle Road, the side streets include Peel Park Terrace, Park Cliffe Road, Baker Street and Oxford Road. Peel Park Primary School, Moorside Surgery on Dudley Hill Road and The Malt Kiln pub are handy markers, and St Andrew's Methodist Church and St Augustine's Church both stand on Otley Road.
How the van gets to Undercliffe
Idle Road meets both the A658 Otley Road and the A6177 Northcote Road here, and Northcote Road links on to Harrogate Road and Killinghall Road. Dudley Hill Road runs off Harrogate Road towards Wellington Road and Undercliffe Road. From the city centre, the A658 Otley Road is the direct way out to Undercliffe.
