Will It Fit in a Long Wheelbase Van?

Load space is 3.4m × 1.3m × 1.7m. Here's what that means for sofas, beds, fridges and whole homes.

The most common question we get after "how much?" is "will it fit?" Here are the real numbers for our Ford Transit Long Wheelbase van, and what they mean for the things people most often need moving.

Ford Transit LWB load space

MeasurementSize
Load length (floor)3.4 metres
Width between wheel arches1.3 metres
Width above the archesapprox. 1.75 metres
Load height (standing)1.7 metres
Usable volumeapprox. 11 cubic metres
Rear door openingapprox. 1.55m wide × 1.6m high
Side sliding doorapprox. 1.3m wide × 1.6m high

The 1.3-metre figure between the wheel arches is the one that catches people out: anything wider than that has to sit above the arches or on its side. Almost everything domestic does fit, here's how.

Sofas

A standard three-seater (around 2.0–2.2m long, 0.9m deep) goes in lengthways on its back or on its feet with room to spare. A corner sofa's two sections both fit, usually standing on end, with the footstool between them. Very large modular sofas, the six-seat U-shapes, need the sections measured, but so far we've only had one that needed two trips. See sofa delivery.

Beds and mattresses

Every UK mattress size fits flat on the floor or on its side, unfolded: single (190×90cm), double (190×135cm), king (200×150cm) and super king (200×180cm, on its side). Divan bases come in two halves. Bed frames are dismantled. A whole bedroom, bed, mattress, wardrobe, drawers, two bedsides, is comfortably one load.

Fridges, freezers and washing machines

A standard fridge freezer (about 60×60×180cm) travels upright with plenty of headroom under the 1.7m roof. American-style fridge freezers (around 90cm wide, 178cm tall) also fit upright, 1.7m is the internal height but they go in at a slight lean on the trolley and stand once inside, or travel with the doors removed if the model is over 1.75m. Washing machines, dryers and dishwashers are 60cm cubes and stack two high if needed. See appliance delivery.

Wardrobes, tables and awkward furniture

  • Double wardrobe (approx. 1.0×0.6×2.0m): fits lying on its back. Triple and sliding-door wardrobes are usually dismantled.
  • Dining table for six (approx. 1.8×0.9m): fits flat or on its side with legs off; chairs stack around it.
  • Upright piano (approx. 1.5×0.6×1.2m): fits, with notice, strapped upright against the bulkhead.
  • Treadmill / gym kit: fits; most treadmills fold.
  • Bikes: several, standing.
  • Garden shed (flat-packed) and 8×6 panels: fit on their side along the 3.4m length.

How to check before you book

  1. Measure the item's longest dimension. Under 3.3m? It fits lengthways.
  2. Measure its width. Under 1.3m? It fits on the floor between the arches. Under 1.7m? It fits above them or on its side.
  3. Measure the height. Under 1.7m? Stands up. Taller? It goes on its side or gets dismantled.
  4. Still unsure? Send us a photo and the dimensions on WhatsApp and we'll tell you straight.
