The five things that set the price
- Time on the job. Loading, driving, unloading. A single sofa across town is an hour; a two-bed house is half a day. Stairs, long walks from the van, and dismantling furniture all add time.

For anything up to a two- or three-bedroom home, a man with a van is usually the cheapest option that still includes labour. Removal companies quote for a crew and a lorry and make sense for larger detached houses. Self-drive van hire looks cheap until you add the insurance excess (often £1,000+ for younger drivers), fuel, and the fact that nobody is helping you carry a washing machine.
