Lifts, stairwells and loading bays in Rotherham flats
Beeversleigh is the town's only high-rise: 48 flats over 13 floors, built in 1970. A move there depends on the lift, so book it with the building if that is possible, and measure the lift car against a sofa or wardrobe before the day. Flats over shops in the centre are the opposite problem. The stairs are narrow and often turn, and the street outside may be pedestrian, so the van stops in the nearest legal space and everything goes in on the trolley.
Apartment blocks such as Westgate Riverside and Shaftesbury Square may have a lift or a residents' car park, but the van is about 2.5m tall and cannot go under a covered car park entrance, so it waits at the kerb or in a surface bay. Rotherham Council also licenses private landlords across the town centre, Eastwood, Clifton and Boston Castle, so if you are leaving a rented flat there, get the move-out date and any inventory check in writing from the landlord before fixing the van.
Before moving out of a Rotherham flat
- Tell us the floor, whether there is a lift and its size, and how far the van can stop from the entrance
- For Beeversleigh or another block with a lift, ask the managing agent about reserving it for the morning
- A flat over a shop on a pedestrian street is loaded from the nearest side street, so name it when asking for a price
- Take down any wall-mounted TV and empty the drawers of flat-pack units before the day
- Check the tenancy end date and key return with the landlord, especially in the selective licensing areas
- Large items that will not fit the new flat can go to the council's bulky waste collection rather than on the van

Flat Removals in Rotherham: your questions
What if the lift is out of order on the day?
The move still happens, carried down the stairs, but it takes longer. Tell us as soon as you know, and if the building can say when it will be fixed, the time can be moved.
Can you move a sofa out of a flat above a shop?
Usually, if it went in. Measure the stairwell turn and the door, and send a photo of the stairs. Some sofas have removable feet or backs that help on a tight turn.
Can the van park in the car park under my block?
Only if there is no height barrier. The Transit is about 2.5m tall, so it stops at the kerb or in an open bay and the load is carried from there.
Do I need to be there for the whole move?
Someone needs to let the driver in at the start and receive the keys at the new flat. You can then head to the new address while the van is on its way.
